Lovely Fishing Spider

Perenethis venusta

Description:

This is my first spotting of Perenethis venusta, the Lovely Fishing Spider. I was delighted when I saw the spider, in the first photo, approximately half-way up the stem of the plant. It was only when I changed my position, to try for a better view, that I noticed the other one near the top of the stem of the same plant. Now I was wondering why a "fishing spider" would be so far from water (the nearest is a small stream, about 50 metres away), but it seems that fishing is only one source of sustenance for this spider, it is quite capable of catching and eating any small insects which might fly into its three-dimensional web.

Habitat:

Spotted in the farm on Tropical Whiteweed (Ageratum conyzoides Linn.).

Notes:

My only previous spotting of a Perenethis sp. was P. indica (Nursery Web Spider). That was on Nov 27, 2015 - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/10...... The presence of Perenethis venusta, in the Philippines, is confirmed in - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perenethis......
