Spider Web

Habitat:

Mixed forest

Notes:

I was looking through my album of spider photos and came across this web with a stabilimentum. The spider is behind it. It seems like an unusual stabilimentum and worth posting.

I think you're right about it being a cyclosa web. Here's an interesting theory about it. https://www.businessinsider.com/spider-c...

Hi Tom, that's an interesting stabilimentum. I think that it was probably made by a Cyclosa sp. My first reaction was that it is small (in relation to the size of the spider) but sometimes Cyclosa spp. do make quite small decorations. You can see one or two in https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/cyclos........ I don't know what a stabilimentum like this one is called (it might not have a name). I would think that it could be categorized as an Irregular Spiral. It might even be called a Discoid Stabilimentum, but I think the latter is used only in reference to Argiope spp. Sorry - as you can tell, I'm not sure about any of this, but I always think it's better to just say what you think - there is always the chance that it might trigger a reaction from someone who knows, definitively what this is called and then we can all learn....P.S. I just spent another few minutes, looking at your photo again, before clicking the send button and the more I look, the more I think it is a Cyclosa web and stabilimentum. Nice spotting, Tom.
