Trichonephila edulis
A large attractive Orbweaver with long red legs and elongated grey body in the centre of its beautifully constructed web. The spider could have been about 30 mm long with black fangs.
Spotted in a suburban garden.
The web was large, complex and intact. Barrier webs as protection for the main web can be seen in pic 3.
Family: Nephilidae.
Males are very much smaller.
The species name "edulis" indicates that these spiders are eaten as a delicacy in some parts of the world like New Caledonia.

Thanks John. As usual my very simple camera hasn't done much justice -it is an amazing-looking spider. Like you I wouldn't want to eat one either.
What an amazing spider, Leuba, and the web is really impressive. That's what I call a great spotting. You might have noticed that I love spiders, but I'm not sure that I could eat one :-)
