Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

Description:

Juvenile Red-tails don't have a red tail like the adults. The red tail is the mark of a seasoned and proved hunter. This particular individual looks sure to reach his goal. California contains Red-tail types known as the "classic western" models.

Notes:

The wind was blowing hard yet this bird of prey seemed to remain motionless from her mastery of wing control. I say "she" because it was larger.

Neither. This is not a captive bird Animalia. Often, when birds are injured, they are rescued, tagged, then released again. Or maybe it was captured by Golden Gate Raptor Observatory during their migration count, tagged, and then released again. This bird was photographed while hunting near the lighthouse at Point Reyes National Seashore.

Is this from a zoo or a reserve? Please specify with name, because I haven't seen captive reds anywhere in Cali. (It's captive because there's a tag on the right leg) Amazing shots too!
