Description:

Found a few of these in a gorge hike at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. Early spring perennial to 6 inches tall has an underground rhizome.

Habitat:

Rich moist woodland.

Notes:

Ranger removed one to show the bright red root (replanted) Previously used by original people for dye and body paint.
