A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Zalophus californianus
Sea lions are sexually dimorphic, males are larger than females, and have a thicker neck and protruding crest. The first pic is of a very young male, the third pic shows a female and the fourth another young male. They mainly haul-out on sandy or rocky beaches, but they also frequent manmade environments such as marinas and wharves. Sea lions feed on a number of species of fish and squid, and are preyed on by killer whales and white sharks.
Pier 39 in Fishermans Wharf, in the marina of SF bay has become greatly popular as it has been chosen by wild sea lions as a favorite hang out stop. Every day they come in large numbers to relax and bask in the sun while tons of tourists come around to see them. Why did they choose this spot is not exactly known but the pier is now a protected area reserved for the sea lions.
