Great blue heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

The Great Blue Heron is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North and Central America as well as the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands. It is a rare vagrant to Europe, with records from Spain, the Azores, England and the Netherlands.

Habitat:

Stanley Park, Vancouver BC

Notes:

We spotted this guy standing just a few feet away from a busy trail. It seemed completely unconcerned at our presence & I was able to get within 5 feet for my photos.

Lovely portrait! Audubon has a live web cam of a GBH incubating a pretty blue egg: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/page.aspx?p...
