Description:

They belong to the Syrphidae family commonly known as hoverflies. Flies (Diptera) that feed on nectar.
Scaeva selenitica is a European species of hoverfly.
It is a large distinctive fly with three pairs of yellow comma markings (lunules) on the abdomen, these are white on Scaeva pyrastri
Adults are common visitors to flowers. The larvae feed on aphids.

Thanks! I feel even luckier for having identified the species. Have some more Syrphidae in store, but no idea even to what genus they belong to.
