Yellow-legged Gull

Larus michahellis

Description:

This gull was only recently recognized as separate species in family Laridae. This is a large white gull with grey coat, black wing tips and bright yellow legs. The head is snow white, with yellow beak and eyes, and red eye-rings and red spot on beak. Juveniles birds show brown patterned coat and bills of darker brown shades (photos 5 and 6).

Habitat:

Very common bird in Dalmatia; here seen on island of Lokrum, almost at the entrance to the Old City. This is an island in Mediterranean environment, with rocky terrain with dense mediterranean forest, but no large mammals.

Notes:

It can be useful to note here that the island of Lokrum has a very special status - this a Nature Reserve and a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve. As such, plenty of measures are reinforced: it is not allowed to endanger in any way the natural and cultural goods on the island, to throw the waste, bring dogs or light the fire. Smoking is prohibited. It is not allowed to stay on the island overnight. While respecting these, the island is very worth visit and exploration... The arrival and the departure to and from the island are organized from the Dubrovnik ancient Town port, where you can find the sailing timetable.
