Zebra Longwing chrysalis

Heliconius charithonia

Habitat:

Gulf coast states Florida to Texas, tropical hammocks and wooded areas, gardens, etc. Caterpillars found on host plant Passion Vines. As seen here they will pupate on other plants.

Notes:

The Zebra Longwing's chrysalis looks like a dried up little leaf that is all curled up. I don't know if this is always true, but it seems they'll do this on shrubs other than their host food plant the passion vine where I think the leaf mimicry would be less convincing. After taking the first picture I walked by it later on in the day and noticed two adults on it. I wasn't sure what was going on, but bugguide provides the answer: In an attempt to mate " Adult males are attracted to female chrysalids just before they emerge." There was a very large number of adults here on this occasion.
