Stag Beetle

Aegus chelifer (male)

Description:

Large beetle of about 4cm body length with large pointy mandibles. Quite broad, but also flat. Glossy black with grooves running down the length of the elytra. A local told me that they live and feed in coconut trees.

Habitat:

Found at night attracted to lights on Koh Sriboya island.

Notes:

Apparently, this species is now established on the Seychelles, where it is thought to have arrived in debris after the 2004 Tsunami, carried by the ocean currents from Thailand. There are no records previous to 2004, hence the conclusion.
