The Australian Eastern Water Dragon is a shy agamid lizard with a head-body length up to 23 cm and a tail length of up to 80 cm. It has a crest of spines from the neck down onto a long flattened tail. Yellowish brown in colour with dark bands and a dark eye stripe.
Spotted in an outer suburb garden bordering on a creek. Australian water dragons are semi-aquatic and typically perch in conspicuous ways near creeks, rivers, lakes and other water bodies. Distibution: Eastern Australia from northern Queensland to Gippsland in eastern Victoria. A different subspecies in found in Gippsland (P. l. howittii).
The first individual (pic 1-3) is a female or a juvenile and was missing part of its tail. The second individual (pics 4-6) is a male, as shown by its size, the red colour on the belly and the more prominent colours and spikes.

@Dan.. they are really everywhere. I have one in my Garden 200 m to the creek but he likes the dog food.. :)
@Dan, they are actually quite common and you'll see them wherever there is a good amount of fresh water and vegetation. Here is one I came across right in the middle of the city:
