Eastern bluebirds (box #1 brood #1)

Sialia sialis

Description:

I'm monitoring our small bluebird trail (7 boxes) on a weekly basis.

Habitat:

Bluebird trail in semi rural yard (8.7 acres) We have been creating a wildlife habitat since April 2011 & received NWF certification last fall. Our plan included creating a small bluebird trail of 7 boxes & planting around 100 trees to provide wildlife corridors & places for the male bluebirds to perch to guard the nest. Currently 5 of the 7 boxes are occupied - 4 by bluebirds & 1 by tree swallows.

Notes:

I will continue to add photos as the eggs hatch & the chicks develop.

Thanks Carol & Courtney! I will scrubbing out the box today so it will be ready for the next brood - as you can see it certainly needs it!

Day 16 since hatching & the brood is almost ready to fledge. They barely fit in the box now & the nest is so squashed they are almost sitting on the floor so they must be getting pretty uncomfortable!

Thanks Alice! I'm monitoring bi-weekly now & it its so interesting to see the development, especially as I have 3 broods all at different stages!

My brother does some monitoring of boxes in a park through the Summer. It is an interesting Job and you are doing it quite well!

The first couple of eggs have now hatched & we now have some very ugly, naked newborns! Hopefully the remaining eggs will hatch today.

I've created separate spottings for each box so I can follow the progress of each brood. Mom was on the nest when I came to do a check today. She flew out when I tapped on the box & returned a few minutes later. No eggs hatched yet in this box.

Thanks Luc! I love bluebirds & they seem to very easy to attract with the boxes. We put up our first one last June & had a pair starting to nest in it 2 hours later! I'm exciting to get the opportunity to observe the development of the chicks.

I'm thankful we got such good take up & hopefully the other boxes will get used for the later broods. I haven't checked out our wren houses yet but we have loads of wrens & chickadees so hopefully we will get some tenants in those too. No interest in the new martin house yet though!

Nice that you can watch them. This year two of my boxes were taken by wrens and chicadees and 2 boxes are empty (so far).
