Giant Honey Bee

Apis dorsata binghami

Description:

We came across a large tree with over a dozen HUGE beehives (some easily a meter across) hanging from its branches. People from the nearby village of Lempur, on the outskirts of the Kerinci Seblat National Park in Sumatra, periodically harvest the honey. When I asked the local guy we were with how they were able to accomplish this rather dangerous feat, he replied, in absolutely complete seriousness, "at night, with smoke and a little magic." Sorry about the image quality in the last photo. It was a tight crop of an already zoomed image. I couldn't (didn't want to) get any closer.

Magic is always great stuff for handling bees if you have forgotten your bee suit. :)

They're right on the doorstep of one of the largest protected areas in Asia, so yes!

Incredible to see that many in one tree! They must have a good source of flowers somewhere near!
