Meadow Fritillary Butterfly

Beloria bellona

Description:

Medium sized butterfly, tan or brownish orange with black dashes and dots. Males and females look identical. A North American butterfly In the Brushfoot family. 3.5 - 5.1 cm (1 3/8 - 2 inches) wingspan.

Habitat:

Meadow on my property They like low wet meadows. The larva feed on violets.

Notes:

More common in summer and fall so I am glad to have seen this first one here early spring. First spot of the year of this particular one.
