Description:

9-10" (23-26 cm). Stocky, mostly dark-brown; head glossy, black; legs, bill, and bare orbital region yellow legs; large white patch visible in flight and at rest; tail brown, tipped with white.

Habitat:

Grassy field.

Notes:

Introduced into Hawaiian Islands in 1865 to control insects; by 1879, reported as abundant in Honolulu. Thought to have had little or no involvement in the drastic declines of native Hawaiian bird populations.
