Crane Fly

Description:

Long-legged, winged insect. Orange to red colored abdomen with translucent wings. About 5/8 to 3/4 inch body. Almost looks like a "daddy long legs" with wings.

Habitat:

Urban rooftop garden. Lots of sunlight and high heat.

Notes:

Found sitting on the leaf of some ivy that was growing on a fence.

This is a cranefly (diptera)

The cranefly is also sometimes called a daddy long legs, as is the long legged spider that you are referring to.
