Giant Leopard Moth ( An Empty Cocoon )

Hypercompe scribonia

Description:

An Empty Cocoon: The first, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar, ( which was two inches long ), went under the moss and twigs, and constructed a silken cocoon, in the smaller rearing chamber. Some time later, I built a new, larger, rearing chamber. I then removed all the moss and twigs, from the smaller rearing chamber. As I was doing this, I found a silken cocoon. I put this silken cocoon, on the floor of the new, rearing chamber. Some time later, I saw a new, one inch, Giant Woollybear caterpillar, resting on one end, of this new, rearing chamber. I also saw five strands of silk, surrounding this new, one inch, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar. Sometime later, the second, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar, reappeared. ( This second, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar, is also, two inches long ). Every time I look inside this new rearing chamber, I see the second, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar, sleeping, side by side, with the new, one inch, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar. They both sleep side by side, in the daytime, in the evening, and also at night. At night, both caterpillars, go there separate ways, to find fresh green leaves, to munch on. On a hunch, I picked up this silken cocoon. To my amazement, this silken cocoon, was empty! ( This silken cocoon, was torn open, by this new, one inch, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar ). ( To my amazement, this new, one inch, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar, came out of this silken cocoon ). Now, there is one, two inch, Giant Woollybear caterpillar, and one, one inch, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar, living in this new rearing chamber. This silken cocoon, was attached to some moss, twigs, and leaves. Photos No. 1, 2, 3, and 4, shows this silken cocoon, that was torn open, by this new, one inch, Giant Woollybear Caterpillar.

Habitat:

These two, Giant Woollybear caterpillars, are now living in this new, larger, rearing chamber, that is inside my house.,

Notes:

I am still trying to rear, two, Giant Woollybear Caterpillars, until they change into two, beautiful moths. Each day and night, is a new experience.
