Backswimmer

Description:

Are designed to swim upside down and as a result are darker on the bottom than they are on the top; this is the opposite of most aquatic species.

Habitat:

Along the shores of a mesotrophic lake in the Laurentian Mixed Forest ecoregion of Minnesota.

Notes:

Identified to family (Notonectidae); taken through a microscope.

Close, but the barred pattern on the wing suggests its a water boatman, not a backswimmer. The two are often confused for one another.
