Lone Star Tick, male

Ambylomma americanum

Description:

Gross tick. Mostly dark reddish-brown, but with some iridescent blue sheen to it. Actually sort of pretty, for a tick. You can tell it's male because it lacks the distinctive "lone star" spot on its back, which females have.

Habitat:

On a piece of rotting wood, under a couple inches of moist soil. Under logs, rocks, and leaf litter in shady part of woods.
