American Bittern

Botaurus lentiginosus

Description:

A stocky medium sized heron with thick striping. This bird is uses it camouflage of thick stripes to blend into reeds by standing with its neck and bill stretched upward. It often crouches and slips away through thick vegetation.

Habitat:

Fishing in heavy vegetation in Brazos Bend State Park.
