Candy Cap

Lactarius sp.

Description:

Small brownish specimen w/ a peak in the center resembling a spike. Underneath the gills were basically the same color as that of the cap top. The stem was slightly curved and was also basically the same color as that of the cap top.

Habitat:

Located at a County preserve. The soil in this area was basically sandy. This specimen was growing through decayed wood pieces and some green vegetation. It was along side a firebreak of disturbed sandy soil.

Looks like one of the "candy cap" Lactarius species. They can be pretty difficult to narrow down.
