Tailed Copper

Lycaena arota

Description:

Small butterfly with gray dorsal coloring that includes black spots and a white band near the wings edge. There is a coppery shine off the dorsal side; however, this particular specimen is much paler than others I've seen. The dorsal side is copper colored with a dark edging (not pictured).

Habitat:

Along a river about 5,000 ft in elevation in Yosemite National Park. This butterfly is found in the western US and Baja California.
