Lilac breasted Roller

Coracias caudatus

Description:

brightly coloured, conspicuous bird 32 - 36 cms long, the lilac coloured breast and elongated outer tail feathers easily separates this species from other Roller birds in Botswana. It is a common resident with a harsh screeching call particularly when displaying.

Habitat:

Savanna, including the drier areas of the Kalahari. This particular individual was resident on farmland

Notes:

Lilac-breasted rollers habitually hawk from exposed branches or posts but have a particular preference for telephone wires and power cables where they often have a favoured position to which they return
