Description:

smallish bird about 15cm, the red bill, violet ear patches and vivid blue rump make these birds easy to identify. The body of the male is deep chestnut with a black chin while the female is a much paler sandy brown

Habitat:

woodland, savanna and bush veld, in sandy area with 500mm summer rainfall. Photos taken by a farmhouse garden tap

usually seen in pairs or small family groups foraging in bushes.
