Candy Stripe Orchid

Phalaenopsis hybrid

Description:

Phalaenopsis orchids are also known as moth orchids because their large, flat flowers resemble the flying insect. Phalaenopsis orchids typically bloom once a year, and the flowers can last up to six months if the plant is properly cared for. Because of the numerous hybridised versions of the Phalaenopsis, varieties of the orchid come in a wide range of sizes, colors and patterns. Most nurseries and home garden centers carry Phalaenopsis orchids in various shades of pink and white. People view a phalaenopsis orchid as some sort of exotic, difficult to grow plant, when they really aren’t. Orchids have traditionally been grown by speciality growers, producing flowers for the florist trade or plants for the “collector”.

Habitat:

In nature, they are typically fond of warm temperatures (20 to 35 °C), but are adaptable to conditions more comfortable for human habitation in temperate zones (15 to 30 °C); at temperatures below 18 °C (64 °F) over-watering causes root rot. Phalaenopsis requires high humidity (60-70%) and low light of 12,000 to 20,000 lux.

Notes:

A warm day temperature inhibits flower initiation in Phalaenopsis.
