Description:

Large deciduous tree with compound leaves. Male and female flowers on same tree; male flower spike or catkin 5-6 inches long in spring.

Notes:

State tree of Texas. It was an important food source for Native American groups. The leaves and bark have been used medicinally as an astringent.
