Red-eared Sliders and Common Snapping Turtle

Trachemys scripta, Chelydra serpentina

Description:

Two red-eared slider turtles and one common snapping turtle basking on a log. Snapping turtles aren't known for being basking turtles, but they are commonly seen basking at this pond.

Habitat:

A large pond that is fed by a cold spring fed stream, which probably explains the basking behavior of snapping turtles here. They need to bask to maintain a warmer body temperature.
