Cypripedium pubescens
Spotted these on a hillside hike at the the Edge of Appalachia wildlife reserve.. Perennial herb to 36 inch tall (hairy stem) Flower 2 inches long- purplish brown, twisted lateral petals - 3 wavy-edged sepals.- lower petal (lip) has a showy yellow creamy pouch. 2nd picture includes the Red Indian Paintbrush and the Yellow Hoary Puccoon.
Rich alluvial floodplains, forest slopes.
Re-identified this spotting by advise from local plant enthuisiast friend.
Thanks Chebeque2 - Yes they are endangered - So its important not to give precise location of the plants - There are plant thieves out there.
This could be the Cypipedium pubescens but I am fairly sure because of the open pouch!
Thanks Alice - Seeing a hillside peppered with these yellow lovelies is worth the climb and being alive.
