The Sultan Lantern Bug

Pyrops sultana

Description:

A large striking white lantern bug with faint orange spots and a large red and yellow horn

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

Spotting # 3300! My first lantern bug (Pyrops species) that I've ever spotted! I'm fascinated by this large and colourful insects and have been searching for them for years in SE Asia. I spotted this one on a tree near the campsite in Gunung Gading national park. I was acting on a tip from a fellow nature lover staying at the park for a few days. She had spotted one in the area so I searched it a few times. I checked it one last time right before I left the park and finally spotted it! I took some shots from far away, but then I could tell it was going to be calm and was able to get fairly close, these shots aren't cropped or edited at all. Although I still have some photos to post from Malaysia and Indonesia, they are going to have to wait to get posted. This will be my last spotting for a while as I leave for southern Africa in a few days. I can't wait to start sharing some of the spottings I'll be getting there.
