Indian Nightjar

Caprimulgus asiaticus

Description:

Large bird with mottling of colours that allows it to blend in perfectly. Shades of greyish brown streaked blackish brown...all colours that blends in with shadows and soil.

Habitat:

Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary (CKBS). This sanctuary has "paths" which visitors are expected to follow but we strayed from these safe paths and entered the vegetative growth...there was a deep gully (dry now) covered with vegetation. We were standing at a height and one side fell steeply towards this gully. There was a very thick vine with its free, growing end extending into the gullly. At its base, where the vine almost touched the soil, directly under where I was standing, but with a steep vertical clearance, sat this bird with its tail towards me. It looked like a lump at the base of the vine... I am so grateful that it did not fly away before I actually saw it.

Notes:

A lifer for me.
