Solanum leaf flea beetle

Psylliodes sp.

Description:

A tiny beetle with metallic dark bronze colour on most parts. A tall 'arched' shape and very strong looking femurs on the rear legs. Great for jumping with. Also on this plant (Kangaroo apple - Solanum laciniatum) was one patch of tiny pearly dark eggs suspended in a paler fluid. I also found one beetle which apparently had just started laying similar looking eggs. Beetle 3mm max length. Some had a more bluish tint.

Habitat:

Suburban fringe.

Notes:

Heaps of these on our kangaroo apple tree (Solanum laciniatum). ~3.2mm bodylength.... http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2003/03062... These beetles look metallic blue from a distance but more bronze when closer. These are easy to confuse with a much larger version of blue flea beetle.... it's critical to check size!!!

Thanks oxyjack. At this time of the year there's so little going on with insects but these guys don't seem to know it's almost winter.

Nice, Argybee! I found a shiny blue-black flea beetle in my yard just the other day. So tiny!
