Cersis canadensis
Small, less than 30 feet, deciduous understory tree. Short trunk and rounded crown. Bark is grey when young, but turns scaly brown with age. Twigs are reddish with white lenticels. Leaves are large, drooping, heart shaped and turn yellow in the fall. Small pink pea flowers emerge first in the spring. Long seed pods on older branches. Legume family.
Understory in well watered forests. Often cultivated for landscapes.
