Entomyzon cyanotis
This is a Blue-faced Honeyeater, a passerine bird of the Honeyeater family Meliphagidae (which also includes the Friar Bird and Noisy Miner). This bird has just arrived at the circus which is Neil's place. It's late afternoon but still light. There was loud thumping on the roof, followed by lots of rustling leaves and swinging branches. A Common Ringtail Possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) had leaped into the tree from the roof, which in turn roused my cats, and that bought the bird. The possum didn't know what all the commotion was about, but the cats could see the possum and the bird, and the bird could see the cats, the possum, and me. Lots of meowing, squawking, and chomping on flower buds. A few photos later and I chased them all off. Give me some peace!
This bird was spotted in a suburban backyard in inner-city Brisbane.
It was dusk but still fairly light, so it was very unusual to see the possum so early in the evening. It came to feed on a native Lilli Pilli (Syzygium luehmannii) which is currently fruiting. I don't often see the Blue-faced Honeyeaters either. Not totally rare, but for every one I see, I would see at least 1000 miners.
