Diospyros texana
Shrub or small tree. Smooth grey bark. Leaves are simple, alternate and dark green. Small, fragrant bell shaped flowers followed on females, by green fruit, turning black when ripe.
Open woodlands, thickets, hillsides and ravines.
Edible fruit can be eaten raw, made into jelly or fermented to make a varietal wine. The black juice from the fruit has been used to dye leather.
