Elegant Stinkhorn

Mutinus elegans

Description:

Beautiful orange and red fruiting bodies. The dark slimy looking stuff on the upper parts of the fruiting bodies is the spore mass. They smell a bit like something rotting, this attracts flies and other insects which, in turn spread the spores.

Habitat:

Woody debris and leaf litter.

Notes:

Found growing in wood mulch under oak trees at Sands Point Preserve, Sands Point, NY in Early September.

A co-worker showed me some of these today but they were past their prime and were falling apart. They still had the odor, however, and I didn't hesitate to get a noseful of it. ;-)
