Pandion haliaetus
Ospreys's are a medium sized hawk-like bird. Wingspreads are roughly 5-6 feet. Main body underside is white with feathers being black & white. Tails fans out in flight. Flight is level, not like that of vultures. Looks similar to most large gulls in flight.
Water adjacent. Feeds on fish, requires large solitary trees for nesting sites.
This Osprey was feasting on a fresh caught fish in a tall dead pine tree beneath it's nest. It was tossing bits & pieces of fish all over as it chowed down on it's meal. These photos were taken with a Canon EF100-400 f/4-f/5.6 lens mounted on a Canon Rebel T2i.
