AntLion Larvae

Myrmeleontidae

Description:

The AntLion digs a round cone-like pit in loose dry soil. It lays at the center bottom of the pit with only it's mandibles showing. When an ant or similar sized insect falls into the bottom of the pit, the AntLion grabs it, takes it below the soil & sucks out the body fluids. Does not sound to nice, but they will even consume FireAnts, thereby Maybe becoming FLORIDA's Favorite Lion!

Habitat:

Loose dry soil, usually under a covered area so the pit stays dry. Very common in Florida.

Notes:

This is a really unique creature which goes several very stages.
