Shio maneki fiddler crab

Uca arcuata

Description:

The name of this threatened species of crab (Uca arcuata) in Japanese is "shio maneki" or "tide caller." This refers to the way the males wave their large claw over their heads as if they beckon the tides to come in. Due to loss of their natural habitat these crabs are classified as vulnerable (VU).

Habitat:

Shallow tidal areas of brackish estuaries. This individual was observed at the Yoshino River estuary in Tokushima, Shikoku Island, Japan.

Notes:

This individual is a male as seen by the larger claw on one side.

Thank you, both of you. Their habitat is an important estuary that is starting to get the protection it deserves.
