Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Pheucticus ludovicianus

Description:

In its migration route, this lovely rose-breasted grosbeak decided to pull over in our backyard and eat a bit at the feeder. This is a new species for me -- at least, it's new in the sense that I saw it, photographed it, and actually identified it! [janson jones http://dusttracks.com]

These are wonderful birds to have visit! We have four pair that take up residency here, and can be seen at the feeders very often. Semi shy birds unless they become accustomed to your presence. They are omnivorous birds, taking full advantage of their environment. Main diet consists of fruits, seeds, berries, and bugs. I have found that they really enjoy suet. (they will go through a small block in under a week).

Beautiful! I just spotted one of these for the first time too, a couple weeks ago. He was at my feeder every day for 4-5 days, but I haven't seen him since : ( Maybe he was just passing through.
