Guineafowl Puffer (juvenile)

Arothron meleagris

Description:

Also known as Golden Pufferfish, White-Spotted Balloon Fish, White-Spotted Puffer and Spotted Pufferfish. They are usually black with white spots, but can go through a yellow phase with black spots. They feed on branching coral and sponges, and grow to a length of about 45cm.

Habitat:

Found singly on protected inner reefs, along reef slopes and drop-offs, at depths of 3 to 24m. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

Spotted this intriguing little baby pufferfish at a depth of about 27m, off the coast of Dayang Beach, Talikud Island. It was approximately 1cm long. When I found it, it was trying to hide beside a "sleeping" feather star.
