Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

Nyctanassa violacea

Description:

A small heron, with an unmistakably marked head and crest as seen in the photo above. Hunts in shallow water for food. Waterproof eyelids can be seen in first photo. These protect the birds' eyes while attacking prey underwater.

Habitat:

Tidal estuaries where food is abundant.

Notes:

This Night-Heron has returned each summer to the backyard of my apartment building. It hunts the shallow waters of the Hague estuary for crabs & small fish. These photos were taken with a Canon EF100-400 f/4-f/5.6 lens mounted on a Canon Rebel T2i.
