Early instar larvae

Paropsis aegrota elliottii

Description:

Bunched up , black tips and tails ..one was away from the rest and alot larger in size. All 1cm in length each. These where quiet fascinating , if you touched a leaf close by they would stand on end , it was very interesting to watch

Habitat:

All huddled up on a eucalypt lef branch , local dry reserve

After hunting around Tas Insects and on Flickr (people in tas) ...this is looking mighty good.

Please consider that these might be Paropsis larvae.

Some Paropsis and Trachymela larvae are thicker posteriorally and sawfly larvae are never so.
Check Paropsis on 'Insects Of Tasmania' for some good examples of larvae and you might even nail an ID.

Neat spotting! Sawflies are actually a type of wasp, not flies. I have removed this spotting from the Flies! mission. This would be a good addition to the Caterpillars and Larvae of the World mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/9420... and the Hymentopera of the world mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/9004...
