Trachyphonus vaillianti
Crested Barbet trying to catch a Green Milkweed Locust in my garden. Two colourful characters each fighting in their own way for survival. The locust was saved because I came out to take a photo.
Favours drier woodland, especially acacia. Has adapted well to urban environments. Throughout the north eastern part of South Africa.

@ Karen: Other spottings of the locust on its own.

In general yes, it would be toxic or bad tasting, but some critters like the barbet might have developed to the point where it is not bothered by this.
What amazing critters you have! I had no idea the local grasshoppers were so gorgeous. The barbet is pretty cool too. If the locust is a milkweed eater, wouldn't he be toxic or at least bitter?
Thanks Karen. This was a real lucky shot!
Great capture

Added better photos of just the bird.
