Heliopetes macaria
This little guy is about 1.25" round
Tropical dry forest in Nw Costa Rica 3 weeks into the rainy season
It seems that the least likely possibility is the ericetorum. Boy, this is a tricky one! There are some Lavinia that look like they could be possible matches and there are some Macaria that look like they can't. Obviously, sir, I am apt to take your suggestion with no qualms. Lately, I am much better at the spotting game than the I.D. game.
Congratulations on becoming a "Ranger". It is well deserved that you should be. I am actually surprised it took so long!
Very tricky one! Heliopetes for sure, and I think it is Macaria if you look at the markings one the apical area of the forewing. Lavinia has different markings there. A little bit confusing are the bow-like markings at the margin of the hindwing, which are in other specimens not so clearly visible as they are in yours. But in the link you can see some traces of them! Please, verify yourself!! Personally I am confident with Macaria rather than Lavinia.
