Spider ball on a string

Tamopsis sp.

Description:

Quite hard; spherical approx. approx. 6mm diameter; smooth; attached to the bark of a local eucalyptus by a very stiff, rigid wire-like string about 60mm long... small hole 1mm near top

Habitat:

Within the bark of E. microcarpa

Notes:

This one looks like is has been raided? as there is a small hole approx. 1mm near the top. It doesn't seem likely that the original inhabitant made it as an exit port would have been much larger. Then again if it is not an egg or pupa shell.... ? Useful suggestions welcome... Current status - spider egg sac which has been vacated 'normally' species yet unknown... Got it thanks to martin and leuba http://www.findaspider.org.au/find/spide...

Wow you've found some good links martin. Maybe an ID is within the realms of the possible. I wonder if we have an equivalent of Theridiosoma in Aus.... searching searching...ok not many but there are a couple... hmm

Seen two of these on the same tree bark recently -will need to research. Interesting that they are not as fragile as they look.

Agriope came up as having seemingly tough egg cases but without the stalk. http://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&am... Since they're common, I think someone will know this one.

Yes I thought spider too martin but don't know if there's much chance of an accurate ID. Still it's impressive to think spiders might create such a tough shell for babies. We have since found many more of these on gums. Your acacia one is impressive though even if severely raided. I will be on the lookout for those. Thanks.

Hi chebeague7. Sorry but I don't understand your species ID suggestion. If it is a serious one can you please give some link to further (non Tolkien) information so the ID can be verified? If it is meant as a joke then 'good one' but please delete it. Thanks.
