Red Velvet Mites

Description:

specimens are less than 1/8" long including legs. Very bright , tiny , fast and red.

Habitat:

Mass lot of them inside flowers in the garden

Notes:

arachnids found in soil litter known for their bright red colours but are often mistaken for spiders. They are active predators as grown adults but as early instars are often parasites on insects

The Trombidiformes in Australia are unusually large too. Most overseas are up to a couple of mm but many of ours are up to 10mm. Also as first nymphal stage (of 2) they only have six legs - pretending to be insects :)
Anyway I think they're really cute.

Thanks for that link Malcolm.....wow ! there are an estimated 1 million species currently living...i see so many different types of ones on my walks , these ones the smallest so far.
