Arrowhead Spider

Verrucosa arenata

Description:

Females of this interesting orbweaver are easy to identify due to their distinctive triangular marking on the abdomen. The body of the spider is mostly a dark brown or reddish coloration, with the exception of the triangle, which can be bright yellow to white. These spiders were plentiful in the forest and many had their webs strung across the hiking trail. Spider at face level.

Habitat:

Nolin Lake State Park, Kentucky. Temperate forest.

Notes:

First two images are of one individual with some sort of prey item. Third image is a different individual with lighter coloration.
