Seagrass Filefish

Acreichthys tomentosus

Description:

With its body color and markings, this filefish mimics the seagrass where it is often found. It feeds on amphipods (tiny crustaceans with no carapace), polychaetes (sometimes known as bristle worms) and mollusks. They grow to a length of about 12cm.

Habitat:

A. tomentosus is a reef-associated and non-migratory species, found at depths of 2 to 15m.

Notes:

Spotted this filefish at a depth of about 5m during a very late night dive at Isla Reta Beach Resort, Talikud Island. It was trying to hide in a clump of seagrass.

I mistakenly identified this as the strap-weed filefish (Pseudomonacanthus macrurus). Corrected now.
