Spangled Skimmer dragonfly (female)

Libellula cyanea

Description:

I got one shot of this beautiful female Spangled Skimmer dragonfly before she flew away. I was SO LUCKY the dragonfly is clearly in focus! Two anatomical features are visible in the photo: the black and white pterostigma located near each wing tip; and the female terminal appendages located at the end of the abdomen.

Habitat:

Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntl...
